Eric Van Name Memorial Bench for the Torrey Pines Gliderport
Eric Van Name started with Genomatica as a temporary Research Associate in 2008. Immediately, he won people over with his boundless enthusiasm, his brilliant mind, his hard work, his willingness to take the risk of being wrong if his contributions could move a project forward, and the close friendship and teamwork that was the essence of Eric every single day. In his few short years at Genomatica Eric rapidly rose to Scientist and was one of our most valuable colleagues until his tragic passing this year. In virtually every aspect of his work and in his personal life as well, Eric embodied the Genomatica company Core Values of: Real, Innovative, United, and Relentless. Losing Eric Van Name at such a young age has been very hard because Eric was so present in all of our work.
Therefore, we want to remember Eric and his legacy in both work and all of his life through a memorial to be placed at one of Eric’s favorite places, the Torrey Pines Gliderport here in San Diego. We are planning to place a bench with a memorial plaque at the Gliderport and have the permission of the Gliderport to do so.
The cost of the bench, concrete slab, and memorial plaque are estimated to be $4000. We hope that all present and past Genomatica employees, Eric’s many friends and relatives will help contribute. Any amount left over will be donated in Eric’s name to the causes that Eric was so passionate about.
