In Honor of Max Eric Leak
please spread awareness so that no mother has to ever feel this pain, this can be detected.
I could’ve never imagine having to make this post. I never plan to share my son in this manner at all but to honor him I have to bring awareness to the rare disorder that took him away from us so soon. I gave birth to Max, Eric Leak, September 19, 2023 at 7:29 PM. He came into this world bright eyed, truly a sight to see, the most beautiful 6lbs & 5 oz Iv ever seen. The way my world changed so quickly I would’ve never imagined , after nursing in my chest for 15 minutes he just suddenly stopped nursing and started turning blue. The nurse snatched him off my chest and began to evaluate him. He was sent to the NICU where the cardiologist confirmed his heart was enlarged and that he needed to be transferred to University of Maryland for further evaluation & treatment beyond what GBMC could provide at the time. I spent the most agonizing longest 17 hours in Postpartum recovery alone with no baby, while his father went with him. I spent every second every moment there alone praying that God would save my baby & restore his heart to normal size, when nurses decided i was well enough to go stay with my Max at the University of Maryland NICU, i was discharged and able to go with my baby. Seeing my son hooked all the those machines fighting for his life completely broke my heart, his father and I spent the whole night there praying and crying out to God for healing. My sons condition did improved but not for long, it was found that there was a more severe reason to his heart being enlarged. Max was diagnosed with A very rare abnormality called Vein of Galen. A vein of Galen malformation is a type of rare blood vessel abnormality inside the brain. In VOGM, misshapen arteries in the brain connect directly with veins, instead of connecting with capillaries, which help slow blood flow. This causes a rush of high-pressure blood into the veins. This extra pressure in the veins caused the rush of blood toward his heart and lungs forcing the heart to work overtime to get blood to the rest of his body. Max was then taken to John Hopkins Nicu, where his heart couldn’t fight anymore and died in my arms. I will speak his name & bring awareness till my last breath #4EverMax
