Hello, this is the Klootwyk family’s GoFundMe page. On September 5th, 2021 my husband Eric, father to our 3 young children, had a grand mal seizure on the runway of Boston’s Logan Airport (Eric was a pilot with Alaska Airlines). This led doctors to discover and remove a grade 4 Glioblastoma tumor. Glioblastoma is very aggressive cancer.

Unfortunately, with Glioblastoma, standard of care isn’t usually enough. Long-term survival is 12-18 months. We were told to seek clinical trials for a better outcome. We found a team of neuro oncologists at St. John’s hospital in Santa Monica that were running clinical trials and Eric began his medical journey of qualifying, and unfortunately disqualifying, from all trials offered. That being said, nearly all of Eric medical treatments have been billed to our insurance then billed to us accordingly.

This past week Eric underwent his 3rd craniotomy after his health declined rapidly as a result of tumor spread. In the past 2 weeks he has been in 4 hospitals, 3 ERs, and just under 700 miles of medical transport. It is unclear at this time what will be covered under our insurance, but we’re hoping for most of it.

What isn’t covered by our medical insurance at all is the 24/7 skilled nursing care that Eric will need in order to return home to his family. This could add up to hundreds of thousands dollars.
