Eric Corbin’s recovery from Covid

Let me start by saying that it is a miracle from God that Eric is still alive and showing slow, continuous improvement daily.

On July 28, 2021, Eric had been COVID positive for 6 days. He had been diagnosed originally at a local urgent care, but his symptoms worsened and had to be taken to the closest Emergency Room. Eric was admitted to the hospital almost immediately with COVID and Pneumonia in both lungs. He was sent home from the hospital 7 days later on August 4, 2021 with oxygen, medications, and visits from home health care providers. After slow improvement at home, on day 7 his improvement plateaued. On the 8th day, he had labored breathing and his oxygen levels began dropping dramatically. An ambulance was called and on Aug 12, 2021 he was admitted to ICU at their local hospital.

Later that same day, the doctors reported that they were unable to get his oxygen levels back up. Eric was in VERY critical condition and they had to put him on a ventilator to save his life. They would not advise any more information other than it didn't look good and he probably wasn't returning home. There were no percentages they could advise his loved ones. The doctors said they had to take it day by day, and would do all they could to help him.

On Aug 13, 2021, the ICU doctor's called and advised that overnight it went from bad to worse. The complications had started and his wife, Kim, had to make life threatening decisions multiple times from that moment forward. Kim was also COVID positive with Pneumonia in both lungs and was unable to go into the hospital to see Eric, or speak to the doctors in person. She was not hospitalized, but is still under medical care for testing and treatment. Updates about Eric's condition were communicated over the phone and consent for each treatment had to be recorded with multiple professionals to witness the approval for the help Eric required to possibly make it through another day.

Eric was then placed in a medically induced coma to allow his body to rest and to fight. After weeks had passed with scares and set backs, the doctor's advised that he was not relying 100% on the ventilator. He was still in very critical condition, but he was finally showing signs of stabilizing with the help of the machines. This was a huge improvement and the first physical sign of hope. However, they advised of the need for a trach and to ventilate him through the trach, because if they left him intubated it could cause further complications that would be detrimental to his survival. The trach was put in soon after.

Eric woke up a few days later. He couldn't speak but was able to respond to voice commands, open and blink his eyes and try to mouth words. On Sept 10, 2021 Eric was transferred to a long term acute care hospital (ICU level) with his ventilator, and they worked on weaning him off the ventilator, trach and sedation medications. After more complications and set backs, he was finally weaned off the ventilator and trach.

On October 14, 2021 they moved him to an in-patient rehabilitation hospital where he is currently on oxygen, a feeding tube, and receiving wound care. He is working on his mobility due to loss of muscle mass, practicing daily life activities, and recovering his throat muscles to improve speech and his swallowing. He still has complications, all are being treated and he shows slow and steady improvement daily. His hospital stay is estimated to last up to 6 more weeks. When Eric returns home, he will continue to have home health professionals visiting, as well as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, and wound care.

Many of their loved ones wanted to help but were unable to until now. The medical bills have started coming in and I'm asking that anyone and everyone that is able, please come together and assist Eric and Kim with the medical bills that they are incurring now and will accrue in the near future. We will continue to pray for Eric's full recovery and for our miracle to be complete. Anything you can contribute will help, thank you all in advance and may God Bless you!
