Eric Bird’s Medical Recovery
Donation protected
Eric was born with congenital hip dysplasia and had his hip rebuilt from bones in his femur as a toddler. At 17, he had arthritis so had to get a total hip replacement.
This year in March, our dear friend Eric went in for a sprained ankle and the doctor suggested he get his hip checked by a specialist. From the CT scan the doctor could see a 3 cm hole in the bone around the implant. They thought that he would just need a bone graft and a replacement of just the cap on the implant. However, during what was supposed to be a routine hip revision surgery, they found that the hole in the bone was from an infection that had been festering for quite some time. They had to take out his entire implant and put a spacer in his hip and leg (they broke the femur bone to get out old implant). It was a 4 1/2 hour surgery and 5 day stay in the hospital. He isn’t allowed to put any weight on his leg which renders him immobile until his next surgery. He has been bedridden since the beginning of May.
To complicate things further, Eric was admitted to the ER last week with a blood clot stemming from his ankle to his pelvic bone and was kept in the hospital for an additional 3 days. This has caused a tremendous amount of work and time for both him and his partner Nicki who is helping him recover and acting as his caretaker.
Eric’s journey is not yet over and it is estimated that he will have 8-12 more weeks of recovery. Eric will receive the originally planned surgery once his infection is fully cleared. As of last week he was admitted to the ER for a blood clot stemming from his ankle to his pelvic bone.
While Nicki and friends, parents, and staff are helping around the clock, he can also use support from our amazing community of friends and family.
We are reaching out to today to help raise money for Eric’s medical expenses, time away from work, food, and resources to help as he and Nicki are unable to provide during this time of need.
Please help and donate to support Eric Bird’s recovery.
