Eric and Desi Need Your Help After Fire

Donation protected
Dear Friends, Family, and Community,

I’m reaching out with a heavy heart but also immense gratitude. On Sunday, December 8th at 3 pm, my boat, Afternoon Delight, caught fire and was lost in its entirety, along with everything I owned and many of my mate Desi’s treasured possessions. After finishing a wonderful charter with a beautiful family, the day turned into one of the most surreal and challenging experiences of my life.

When the fire broke out, I had to make the difficult call to abandon ship. Watching Desi leap into the water and then having no choice but to follow, leaving behind not just a vessel but a home and countless memories, was heart-wrenching. It’s hard to put into words what it feels like to see your life go up in flames, but I know I am lucky—Desi and I escaped safely, and for that, I am endlessly thankful.

I am further thankful that in the moment of crisis, the Singer Island and Peanut Island communities rallied around us in ways I’ll never forget. Local boaters, including Aaron and crew, Peter and his crew, Travis, Ana, and many others, were the first to arrive, helping us to safety and ensuring we were out of harm’s way.

Their swift action, care, and compassion made all the difference. From those who offered clothing (I had only a bathing suit on), food, and a safe place to rest, to the kind words and hugs that reminded us we were not alone—the community is nothing short of extraordinary.

Now, facing the monumental task of rebuilding from scratch, I’m asking for your help. The loss of Afternoon Delight wasn’t just the loss of a boat; it was my home, my livelihood, and a source of joy for so many people who shared unforgettable sailing experiences aboard her.

Your generosity will help cover initial essentials like clothing, toiletries, and temporary housing while also laying the foundation to rebuild what has been lost. Funds will also help us start planning for a new chapter, whether that’s working toward a new vessel or finding stability in another way.

I’ve always believed in the power of community. After experiencing firsthand how people can come together in times of crisis, I know that no step forward is too small. Every donation, share, or kind word means more than I can say.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for standing with us during this difficult time. Desi and I are committed to moving forward with hope and resilience, and we couldn’t do it without the incredible people who continue to lift us up.

With gratitude,
