Hi! My name is Eric Rivera Barbeito. I have been fortunate enough to have been offered the opportunity to attend the Vermont Studio Center's 4-week residency program from May 13th to June 8th! My attendance at the Vermont Studio Center will be my first participation in an artist residency, and will be an invaluable opportunity to grow my craft and concepts regarding my artistic discipline. Art residencies provide artists with the time and facilities to experiment and expand their practices, having consequential impact on the development of their discipline.
The program has graciously provided financial assistance through a generous scholarship and work-exchange. However, I am still faced with remaining expenses of attendance, such as the remaining cost of tuition, travel to and from the program, and material expenses, that hinder my ability to participate. The funds raised through this campaign would be used to address these outstanding costs.
My body of work tackles the history and ongoing relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States, its many contradictions and conditions, and implications on the concepts of autonomy, dependency, designed inefficiency, and conflict. My time at the Vermont Studio Center would allow the full realization of the ideas planned for the program; from an investigation of cartography and power structures to play as a conveyor of the political.
No matter the size of your contribution, please understand how incredibly grateful I am that you see value in work that attempts to unravel and convey a personal take on what it is to miss and to ache for the small island in the Caribbean that I call home.
