Hello friends and family, I have found myself in a very difficult spot overnight; on December 12th at 9:38 pm, I was coming back from the store and was walking down a darker-than-usual street block. I didn’t notice that a large piece of what appears to be a curb for a driveway was in front of me, and I made the mistake of not looking up from my phone and tripped over this curb. Initially, I thought this was just a simple fall, but it turned into much worse. Upon inspecting my leg and hands, I noticed that my hands were scratched pretty badly, but my right knee had taken so much of the fall that it felt dislocated and the knee cap felt inverted. It was a 30-degree night, and I was laying on the sidewalk of a New York City street awaiting an ambulance to pick me up as I could not move from the position I had fallen. Fate would have it that a lovely woman was walking by and provided her scarf and beanie for me so that I didn’t freeze while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. I waited and waited for this ambulance, but 40 minutes had passed, and my feet were going numb. Luckily, a family was keeping an eye out for me in their van across the street and occasionally checking on me while also calling 911.
Nearly an hour I waited in the cold for this ambulance to arrive, but it never did, so this family carried me to their van and brought me to Mt. Sinai Hospital on the Upper East Side. They assisted with getting me inside through all the pain I was experiencing, and I was finally checked into the hospital.
I received a CT scan along with X-rays of my right leg and waited while the doctor provided Tylenol and Morphine to help ease my pain. Thankfully, my best friends Tess and Joyah were by my side, Tess being on the phone with me alerting everyone of my condition when I fell and Joyah staying with me in the hospital for 7 hours as I received my scans and x-rays.
Finally, the doctor arrived and gave me the unfortunate and devastating news that my kneecap was indeed broken and that surgery was inevitable. I was devastated. This is the first time I had ever broken a bone, let alone something so vital in my day-to-day life.
When I fell, I was very hesitant to call 911 as I DO NOT have insurance, and with no insurance, hospital bills are out of this world expensive. I work in the hospitality industry as a bartender at a very fast-paced, busy cafe, and with this accident, it has put me out of work for the time being until I begin to heal from surgery.
This has come out of left field, and I never thought I would be put in this position, but I am at a place where I am scared, and I need to reach out for help. I have no idea how much this hospital visit, scans, X-rays, or surgery is going to cost, but I know it will not be cheap.
I feel this is my only option to assist me in helping pay for these medical bills, rent, and food as I will not be able to work until the surgery is over and I am fully healed, which can take upwards of 6-8 weeks.
I appreciate your time in reading this story and anything that you can assist me with would be extremely helpful. Thank you. Xoxoxoxo
