Erase period poverty & empower First Nations womxn

Donation protected
Support a First Nations woman in her mission to erase  period poverty and stigma in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia.

Our period signifies regeneration; growth; the power of our being. It ought to be a time to retreat to our haven; to be comfortable; to be safe. It ought to be a time for us to feel empowered to carry on with our lives. To continue to be fearless leaders in our workplaces, our schools, universities, and in our communities. While this may be reflective of the experiences of some of us with periods, it’s not representative of all.

And we need to change that.

THE WHY?

Access to education is foundational for our success in life. Across the globe, millions of young women are skipping school, losing grades and dropping out early to manage their periods - which means missing out on reaching their full potential. This is felt particularly hard in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. While other people with periods who, through inequitable access to sanitary products, face barriers to fully participating in their communities.

THE WHO?

My name is Madison Connors (nee’ Saunders), a proud and strong Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung, and Gamilaroi woman, mother, founder and Creative Director of Yarli Creative and Fierce Tidda Club born and raised in Kanny-Goopna (Shepparton), Victoria but now calling Naarm (Melbourne) home. With Fierce Tidda Club, my vision is to create a movement which addresses period poverty experienced by many First Nations womxn. I need your support to bring my vision to life.

Fierce Tidda Club (tidda translates to “sister”) will work to design, develop and produce culturally inclusive, Australian-made, sustainable sanitary items and loungewear with a public health focus and social enterprise model. Fierce Tidda Club will work to create equitable access to sanitary products.

With a background in public health and sociology, and as an Endometriosis Ambassador, I am a strong advocate of women’s health. I want to use my platform as an Aboriginal Artist and Creative Director of Yarli Creative, to make my mob proud of the work that I create and achieve. I want to lead by example. To bring my mob along for the journey.

As a mother of two beautiful children, and as an Endometriosis and Adenomyosis warrior myself, I understand that as a woman the uterus is our most sacred organ. It is the organ which creates and sustains life. While it can bring us great joy, it can also bring us great pain. I want to make sure that the most vulnerable women and girls in our communities receive the support with their menstrual cycles that they need. Although we are all different and come in many colours, shapes and sizes, we all deserve equal and equitable access and support. We all deserve to be proud of who we are as people with periods. Proud of our bodies. Proud of the life our bodies create. Proud of our periods. Proud to have periods.

THE HOW?

Fierce Tidda Club is proudly Aboriginal owned and controlled. We will work alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, showcasing their deadly work. We will be working with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and Aboriginal Medical Services across the country to increase health equity, to educate and empower, to reduce period stigma and shame, and to inspire our mob to live their best life.

CALL TO ACTION

We have already engaged with designers, started the process and had many conversations. However access to capital for start ups is challenging.

To achieve our goal, we need to raise $120,000 to continue getting the research, design, development and production underway. All additional capital raised will go into building Fierce Tiddas Club and our strategy.

By donating you will be supporting a small business committed to having an impact on those who need it the most. Together, we can build a movement that will foster and empower generations of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people with periods to live better lives than they could have ever dreamed that they could.

Self determination and closing the gap starts with our mob doing business our way.

It’s time. Will you be apart of this change?
