On January 5, 2019, Steven had a failed suicide attempt. Steve has been struggling with PTSD from his time serving his country overseas as well as mental illness. We are thankful he was not successful in his attempt! Unfortunately Steve shot himself through his spinal cord and will now be paralyzed from his waist down.
Steve was in rehab for a week, making great progress, before they found fluid on his lungs and around his kidneys. Once this is under control he will start rehab again. Even though this is a set back, Steve continues to be positive and want to move forward in his treatment.
At this time Steve is working to sell his house so he can buy something that is more handicapped accessible. While the VA will help cover the costs in his new home; they will not cover the cost of all the equipment he will need in order to be discharged from rehab.
Once Steve finishes rehab, he plans to go stay with my parents until he can adapt to living on his own in a safe environment, and get his own place that can meet his needs. In order for him to leave rehab he will have to have a ramp put onto my parents home so he can get into their home. He will also need a paraplegic standing frame, a new bed that he can easily get in and out of on his own and a wheelchair tray adaptor.
None of these items are covered by insurance unfortunately and are quite expensive. We hate to ask for help, when our amazing community has already helped us out so much with meals, cards, prayers and packages, but we are in desperate need of help so Steve can come home. We are so thankful for your love and support.
The road forward for Steve will not be easy and we want him to be as successful as he can be given the new obstacles he has to overcome. If you have anything you can donate, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much! Xoxo
