Funds needed for a pilot Python Mini-Camp aimed at closing the digital gap and increasing digital literacy!

Python Mini-Camp 2019:  Digital literacy is a crucial skill for the information age. This mini-camp teaches the fundamentals of the powerful programming language Python. During the course, students will learn general computing concepts, how to create programs, and how to implement code to create digital art. Python is an easy-to-read and quick-to-learn language and is commonly used in the tech industry for data science, A.I. (Artificial Intelligence), and Machine Learning.

Purpose:  To provide basic technological access to diverse high school students from communities underrepresented communities in the tech industry as a beginning step to amplify their direct voices in the creation of online products and conversations.  At the end of this pilot mini-camp an assessment will be done to determine future long-term commitment from all parties in establishing a sustainable program.

Goals for students:

∙ Gain a better understanding of digital literacy both as a consumer and creator of technology.

∙ Using acquired knowledge to have greater access to technology and a greater voice in the digital age

∙ Share their knowledge with their peers.

∙ Create ripples in the dearth of representation in the current tech world.

To ensure this pilot group has support and follow-up after the sessions are complete, our intent is for the students to keep the instructional laptops which are currently on loan from Interconnection.org.

Collaboration:  IN-KIND DONATION: $13,358.00

This summer’s pilot program is a collaboration between the following non-profits:  EchoX (an upcoming, online community hub launching in Fall 2019), Key Tech Labs, Latino Community Fund, and Washington Hall, along with the help of two faculty from Seattle University who have donated their curriculum and are volunteering their time to teach the classes.  All partners combined have donated a total of $13,358 in in-kind funds (curriculum, teaching, venue, project management, and transportation).
