My name is Valerie Steen, and I am the lead teacher of the HCA LIFEworks Program at Horse Creek Academy. After more than 20 years in special education, I have had the privilege of helping students with disabilities develop the skills they need to become as independent and successful as possible. This year, we are excited to launch the very first HCA LIFEworks Program, a transition-focused program designed to prepare students for life beyond high school through hands-on instruction in independent living, employment readiness, community involvement, and functional academics.
As a brand-new program, we are starting with an empty space and a big vision. We are raising funds to create a fully equipped Life Skills Learning Lab where students can practice real-world skills in a safe and supportive environment. Donations will help us purchase appliances, kitchen equipment, laundry supplies, curriculum materials, adaptive learning tools, vocational training resources, and other essential items that will allow our students to learn by doing.
Our goal is to create a space that looks and feels like the real world—a place where students can learn to cook a meal, do laundry, manage a budget, complete household tasks, prepare for employment, and build the confidence needed to live as independently as possible. Every dollar donated will go directly toward creating meaningful learning opportunities for our students.
Thank you for considering supporting the HCA LIFEworks Program. Your generosity will have a lasting impact on the lives of students who are working hard every day to build brighter, more independent futures. Together, we can help turn possibilities into opportunities and opportunities into success.
