World Finals - ME Odyssey Team

Odyssey of the Mind is an educational organization that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. By using creativity to solve problems whose solutions are developed over a period or months, students have the opportunities to apply their skills and talents. The program fosters creative thinking, teamwork and problem solving skills in addition to developing the confidence and communication skills of each team member.
This past weekend, our Mission Estancia 5th grade team competed in the Odyssey of the Mind State Competition at the University of California, Riverside after coming in first place at the local/regional competition in March. At the State competition, this team again came in first place qualifying them to compete in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Ames, Iowa at the end of May. Each team's performance included an 8 minute solution to the following problem with all scripts, sets, costumes and ideas developed by the students:
Problem 2: Something Fishy
"Teams will design and operate a technical solution that simulates multiple styles of fishing. A Fisher Character will work from a designated area to "catch" three different objects that are outside of that area. The catch will be on the move and will include something expected, something unexpected, and a new discovery. The performance will also include a change of weather and a humorous character that portrays a potential catch and avoids being caught by the Fisher."
This creative team had Vincent Van Gogh hide clues in his Starry Night painting while a doctor and his rat sidekicks attempted to solve the puzzle. Their "catches" as described by one of the California State judges were "ambitious" (but we aren't allowed to describe them until after World Finals).
Last year more than 800 teams from around the world competed in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals and, this year, our Mission Estancia team will be there! Given travel expenses, we estimate that it will cost approximately $1,300 per team member to go to the World Finals, a total cost of more than $10,000 to send all team members and parent coaches.
Any help you can provide would be much appreciated as we encourage creativity and teamwork in these children and support them in their World Finals experience!
Thank you from the Mission Estancia 5th grade Odyssey of the Mind team and their families.
