My name is Rugare. I have dedicated my life to epilepsy research and advocacy in Africa. During my visits to Kenya, Uganda, Senegal, Zambia, South Africa and my work in Zimbabwe, I have interacted with great champions for epilepsy, most of them have overcame the condition. With financial support, their work can be scaled up, and public opinion and policy on epilepsy change. In 2019, these champions teamed up with professionals like myself to form the Epilepsy Alliance Africa, the first home-grown association for epilepsy on the continent.
In 2021, we created the Zebra Stripes Week, which comes every year in the 3rd week of September.
With your support, the Champions will be able to reach more villages and suburbs during Zebra Stripes Week. Your support will enable them to wear zebra colours to be visible. The Zebra Stripes package costs $80. It includes zebra t-shirts, hats, bandana, wrappers, a banner, medic-alert bracelets and first aid posters to give to those with severely unpredictable seizures.

If you stand by these volunteer's side, you will help the EAA accelerate achievement of WHO's Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders (IGAP). IGAP calls for improved access to diagnosis, treatment and medicines, stronger national policies, community awareness, protection of human rights, and a 50% increase in epilepsy service coverage by 2031. Your support will contribute to these global goals by empowering advocates, reducing stigma, and ensuring that people with epilepsy in Africa receive the care, dignity, and opportunities they deserve.
If you are interested in long term partnerships with the EAA, please reach our President Professor Najib Kissani or Treasurer Chantal Kanyabutembo using contact details on the Epilepsy Alliance Africa website .
