Lets help Camidus to innovate

Camidus  is a startup that designs and develops software and systems for land tenure management in developing countries.

Lands are the most important source of wealth creation in the world. It allows us to grow crops that are turned into food and build houses for our families. 70% of the lands in the world are still not mapped; and land parcels are subject to conflicts and massive land grabbing that affects the most vulnerables in our societies. Rapid urbanization in emerging countries is also putting pressure on lands and generates conflicts that are difficult to sette without a system of record.

Organizations such as UN-FAO and US AID  have initiated massive projects to help citizens around the globe to protect their land rights. World leaders are also making the move to add land property rights in the list of post-millenium development goals.

In 2011,39.6% percent of the population in Africa was living in urban areas; by 2030 there will be 760 millions of people living in small or medium size cities across the continent(source: World Urbanization Prospects, Revision 2011). The concentration of human activities in the city and its periphery will increase issues related to property rights (sources: AFDB, UNICEF). In this context, Land Information Systems can help cities protecting the property rights of millions of African citizens.

New technologies that protect land ownership, streamline land transactions and give equal access to land information are key contributors to regional sustainable development. Engaging in projects, partnerships or global discussions helps democratizing that approach and promote its adoption. Camidus is providing an innovative answer from the private sector to the land property rights issues and the future of land tenure management in general.

By 2030, the usage of our platform will allow hundreds of thousands of African citizens to get easier access to land parcels, secure their land ownerships and help city planners designing sustainable urban areas across Africa.

We are building CALAR, a generic and configurable platform that can be deployed to secure cadastre and land registry data owned by land authorities. At the center of that platform will be a dynamic business rules engine that models land tenure laws and rules, in order to validate the compliance of transactions.

In addition to this, the platform will allow land authorities officers or properties owners to update land and cadastre registries using a mobile application.

Citizens will have access to self-service kiosks allowing them to enquire about the status of land parcels and submit specific requests to the land management authorities.

By digitizing land registry data, the platform will not only replace the traditional paper documents used in these countries but also prevent wrongful modifications of any land property or ownership information.

City planners will be able to tap into the up-to-date cadastre data and use it as a diagnostic tool for future urban planning strategies.

The idea for Camidus was conceived around January 2013; as I was reflecting on solutions to urgent socio-economic issues  in Cameroon.

In the late 2000s’ my father entered a legal procedure with another citizen living in Yaounde (capital of Cameroun), and almost lost a land parcel on which he had planned to build a house for his family; at that time I simply thought it was an isolated and unfortunate event. During a trip to Cameroon in 2012, urbanization, education and healthcare issues caught my attention; forcing me to take a step back, analyze the context including and reflect on the issue my father had faced a few years back. I came to the realization and undeniable truth that many families do not have secure access to property rights in Africa. I knew I had the skills and the knowledge required to find a solution that could benefit not only my family but also many others around Africa and the world. I also realized that I had a unique opportunity to make an impact and fulfil a promise I made myself after my graduation from engineering school: use my talents to help tackling challenges met by the society.

In 2015, Camidus was selected as a Semi-Finalist for the Echoing Green Global Fellowship whichis atwenty-seven year-old program for smart leaders who are deeply connected to the needs and potential solutions that may work best for their communities.

Next year, Camidus will open an office space in Yaounde, the capital city of Cameroon  a Central Africa country. Our investment there will create jobs for a dozen of people including a local product development and data collection team.  Please support us in our quest to build an innovative software that can bring positive change to the way lands are managed across Africa. Your contributions to setup and run the local branch of the company in Cameroon will also contribute to jobs creation and alleviating underemployment. The path to success is a collective journey! Lets work together to make this dream comes true.
