Hi, we are Cathleen and John Peterson and our son, Enzo, was born May 2022 with a unilateral cleft lip and a bilateral cleft palate. Enzo is such a blessing to our lives. He is such a happy and handsome boy and steals hearts everywhere he goes when he flashes his wide cleft smile at people. He has been under the care of our wonderful cleft team at the Barrow Cleft and Craniofacial Center in Phoenix, AZ and is scheduled for his first surgery on November 7th 2022 at Phoenix Children's Hospital. We have good insurance coverage which has been helpful in our costs for his regular twice monthly appointments but our out of pocket maximum is huge and we fully anticipate to be spending the entire amount on his surgery and hospital stay. Unfortunately, Arizona is one of the few states which does not have a mandate in place which requires insurance companies or state Medicaid to cover cleft affected children's medical expenses at 100%, we do not qualify for any state assistance programs, and we also do not qualify for the United Healthcare grant our cleft team social worker referred us to because although we are currently a family of four with a single income source, our 2021 tax return does not reflect that because during 2021 we had two sources of income and Enzo wasn't born yet. We are very worried about the medical expenses which we are going to incur from this surgery and hospital stay and lost income when John takes time off work.
