Environmental Education for Students in Africa

50505358_1597704675258336_r.jpeg50505358_1597704790380760_r.jpegGreening Forward is a youth-led environmental non-profit organization working to develop young people into leaders who can make a real impact in their community. We mentor, educate and provide skill-building resources to young environmental problem-solvers, ages 5-25.

Greening Forward Cameroon is led by Forbi Perise, the program's Coordinator. Perise’s primary focus has been empowering young people from around Cameroon to become leaders and changemakers in their communities. His overall goal is to build more resilient communities where young people can fight environmental apathy by teaching one another and taking action.  Since beginning his journey, Perise has been one of the premier leaders in expanding the environmental movement in the country. He has established eco-clubs and service projects in over a dozen schools. He has organized several cleanups and adult sustainable literacy workshops.  And he continues to collaborated with young people all over the world, using what he learns from their experience to help teach and inspire young people in his community.

Despite the impact Perise has had, his work has come with its share of challenges. First, Perise is a full time student when he is not working towards his eco-goals. Most of the resources for his projects come from Greening Forward, which means he needs to operate in a smaller, defined budget. And second, Cameroon is a country experiencing deforestation, plastic pollution, and environmental impacts. However, with scarce education around environmental issues and solutions, Perise's team has had to work much harder and use more resources to educate and engage young people.

With scarce resources at their disposal, Perise and his team are seeking support to help them further their community mission. Their most important needs relate to  providing transportation for school outreaches and teachings, supporting their community volunteers, and acquiring secure spaces and necessary materials for events. As a grassroots organization that has perfected accomplishing a lot with a little over the past several years, Perise and his team will be able to ensure that each donation makes a great impact towards their transformational mission.

Some examples of how money has been spent in the past:

• For $500, Perise and his team were able to teach more than 500 students in over 15 schools about the environmental situation in Cameroon
• With $600 they are able to rent space for one year where they can meet with students, host workshops and other interesting events
• With $300 they are able to provide students with over 150 copies of environment-based comics and text books
• Lastly, with just $350 the team organized a plastic cleanup campaign which collected over 7000 plastic bottles from local waterways

Any donations will go towards the team's future projects and outreach events so they can further pursue their mission. This is an incredible opportunity to make a difference for the young people in Cameroon and for the environment as a whole, and we hope you are able to help contribute whatever you can!
