HELP SABINE ROUSAN BUILD A SAFE FRONT ENTRY TO HER HOME
Many of us are finding that getting older isn’t easy. Our friend Sabine has developed mobility challenges, and all the entrances to her home are now a daily hazard! My husband has agreed to build a solution, but we need help funding the materials for these modest improvements.
Sabine has lived in her home for many years, and neither entry to her home meets code requirements for safety. As you can see in the picture, her front door has two concrete stairs barely wider than the doorway leading down to a concrete pad and sidewalk. There is no landing and no railing, which is a major fall hazard. So when she comes to her doorway lugging her groceries, there is nothing for her to hang on to while climbing the stairs and keying open the door. She has to stand on the narrow step while trying to open the door and then climb into the house with nothing but the swinging door to hold on to. There is no place to set her packages while she does this, so she has to make extra trips.
Sabine makes her living as a massage therapist. Ironically, as she helps others to heal and manage pain, she stands for hours while working with muscle and joint problems of her own. After helping her clients, her own body is very tired, leading to greater instability. Recently Sabine fell while coming out of her front door and was injured. It is only a matter of time until this happens again, and we want to finish these improvements before winter makes conditions even more hazardous.
Our plan is to build a five foot square wooden deck level with the threshold of her front door, accessible by steps with a shorter rise and secure railings all around. She will then be able to use the railings to climb the steps, set down her packages on the landing, open the door and walk right in without hanging on to packages while climbing. I will feel so much better when I know that she will not have to fear injury and missing work after these improvements are made. T
We care about our friend, and we know many of you can relate to her simple needs. Please help us help her! Any amount is very much appreciated!
