As Assistant Principal of University Prep Public Schools, myself and my other administrators are extremely concerned about about the situation many of our families are currently in. 85% of our students at University Prep Charter Public Schools are facing a serious challenge this November as they lose access to their SNAP (food assistance) benefits due to the government shutdown. For many of our families, these benefits are a critical source of stability — helping ensure there’s food on the table each day. Without them, food insecurity becomes a harsh reality. When students worry about their next meal, it affects everything: their focus in class, their energy levels, and their overall well-being. We’re collecting donations to provide grocery store gift cards directly to our students and their families to help bridge this gap and make sure no one goes hungry. Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a real difference. Together, we can help our students stay nourished, supported, and ready to learn.
