UPDATE 06/12/25:
To those who dont know, my dad Faron Gray had surgery on June 8th by 2 of the top surgeons in the country. Due to scar tissue in his chest from his previous surgeries, they had to go in through his back.
During surgery, they found that the bacteria infection from the leak in his aorta had torn a hole through his esophagus. The doctors told us that due to the high complexity of this surgery, the chances of him not making it through recovery in the hospital increased to 65%.
After surgery, they were trying to wake him up out of the anesthesia but he started panicking once he started coming to awareness. Since they performed the surgery through his back, they had to insert a catheter in his back to hook him up to a spinal drain machine to prevent swelling, which could put pressure on his spinal column and cause nerve damage.
Right now, it is crucial that he does not move around too much since one wrong twist or turn could paralyze him. Because of the threat he is to himself when he comes to awareness, it’s too much of a risk to bring him completely out of sedation.
So far we know that he has cognitive function, he is now following simple instructions, (wiggle toes, squeeze hand, blink twice, etc) he remembers his brothers and I, he knows his name, he is able to move his left hand/arm and both feet/legs, he hasn’t moved his right arm much, but we won’t know why until they can remove the spinal drain and bring him completely back to awareness to be able to either write something down or possibly talk if his esophagus is healed enough to be able to.
We thank you for your continued prayers. I’ve started a GoFundMe to help with bills after he’s released from the hospital as this is going to be a very long recovery process.
These funds will go towards getting caught up on bills so that he can rest assured, knowing that he won’t lose my grandparents house, the house he grew up in from childhood. This should cover him for at least the next 3-6p months while he recovers. My Dad and my family and I all appreciate anything that anyone can give to give him some peace of mind so his body can heal. Thank you all and God bless!
