Ensure a Healthy Retirement for Rex

My name is Jamieson and I was Rex’s handler throughout his seven year career as an Explosives Detection Canine with the Transportation Security Administration. We were paired up at the Canine Training Center at JBSA-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas. Together we worked at the Burlington International Airport in Vermont and airports throughout the country including Super Bowl 57. He is now retired and my family and I have adopted him.

Throughout their careers, working dogs’ medical bills are covered by my agency, however there is no coverage once the canines retire. Paws of Honor is one of a few great organizations that provide financial assistance for the retired canine’s medical care throughout their retirement, however they require a $2,500 sponsorship to get canines into their program. We ask so much of the dogs during their working careers, it’s in their best interest to ensure they’re well taken care of during their retirement.

From their website:
The goal of Paws of Honor (POH) is to provide veterinary care and products at no charge* for retired military and law enforcement K-9’s across America that have served our country, locally or globally. Retired K-9s deserve accessible, high-quality veterinary care in return for their commitment and sacrifice for our country.
The monetary burden associated with veterinary care should not fall on the shoulders of the officer/handler/owner once the K-9 has been decommissioned.
