Donations will be used to fund local Ugandan community and orphanage school leader, Loko Avaran, in his travel to the Beit Menachem Synagogue in South Africa.
Loko plans to stay for a month in South Africa and study Orthodox prayer structure, halachot, and Torah lessons connected to South African customs in order to bring this knowledge to the children at the Koren Jewish Orphanage school he organizes and teaches at, and his general community in Putti, Uganda.
Funding will be used to finance visa expenses, travel and hotel costs, and food for Loko as he seeks to enrich his community.
Loko lives in the small Kabwangasi Ugandan village and does not often have the opportunity to directly make contact with and learn from established outside Orthodox communities. By making this journey, Loko will be able to become a resource of knowledge for his community in Jewish ritual knowledge and understanding of neighboring communities besides his own.
Loko strongly believes that learning about South African Jewish culture and meeting with established Jewish communities there will enrich the present and future of his community.
