Help me get to the World Cup

Hello there! I'm Elias Laradi, a sports fanatic from Montreal who bleeds team colors and considers play-by-play commentary as music to my ears.  Let me put down my foam finger long enough to share my behind-the-scenes tale. I arrived on this planet as a special edition model, complete with a rare genetic syndrome, spending more childhood time in hospital rooms than on playgrounds. My scorecard includes sixteen surgeries - I’m pretty sure I earned some kind of frequent flyer points. Tagged with a learning disability, my mom had to play 'real-life Monopoly', flipping houses to finance my schooling. Regular schools threw in the towel on me at 12, suggesting I might have a bright future as a manual laborer. They clearly underestimated my ability to dodge a career involving power tools. My life also includes a sprinkle of light autism and a buffet of other labels. Some might say I’ve been dealt a tricky hand, but I prefer to think of it as a challenging scavenger hunt. Could life have been easier without these plot twists? Probably. But then who wants a sports game without some unexpected overtime? Now Picture this: A young Elias in hockey gear or clutching a tennis racket, my eyes aglow with dreams of sports stardom. Reality, however, was quick to flag a penalty on my coordination and height. Just as my dreams took a hit, my mom swooped in like the ultimate halftime coach. She had a game-changing play: sports journalism! “Why not live in the whirlwind of sports by writing about it?” she said. Moms, the unsung heroes, forever giving us pep talks and rebuilding our dreams.  From that moment, my pen sprinted through fields, courts, and rinks. I embraced every sport like a long-lost relative - no favorites here! Then, women's soccer captured my heart with its tireless fight for equity. It was a gut punch realizing how underappreciated and under-covered these athletes are. Dive into the stats, and it's a bummer. A study in 2021 showed that women’s sports graced the airwaves a meager 5.4% in 2019, which is practically the same as it was in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Fast forward to 2023, and it feels like the media needs an espresso shot, because they’re still snoozing on the Women's World Cup. Guess what? I, Elias Laradi, the sports-junkie-turned-journalist, have nabbed the golden ticket! I’ll be down under in Australia, covering the Women's Soccer World Cup, kick by kick. And let me tell you, this is one game I can’t afford to miss. It’s like the Stanley Cup and Wimbledon rolled into one for me. But here is the kicker. The cost of the trip is quite steep! To give you an idea, a round-trip economy ticket can cost up to $2,500, decent accommodation in Australia is around $175 per day (5,250 for the whole month), food can easily cost $75 per day ($2,250 for the whole month – and I’m not talking about eating lobster everyday), and local transport would cost around $750 for the whole month. Not to mention unexpected expenses that could easily add up to $1,000. Adding all this up, we’re looking at a total of $11,750.  So, here I am, hat in hand, asking for a little help via this GoFundMe. Your help isn’t just about funding a trip. It’s about supporting a dream, celebrating women in sports, and providing that no matter the obstacles, nothing can keep a good man or woman down.  Whether you can chip in a few bucks or a handful of change, know that every bit helps. Like the kick-ass ladies competing in the Soccer World Cup, I’m determined to make my dream a reality. I want to share their stories and victories with the world, and I need your help to do it. In the spirit of fair play, rest assured that I'm not just counting on your loonies and toonies. I've been squirrelling away every dollar I earn from a full-time hustle, but every extra kick counts! In return for your generosity, I pledge to be your personal tour guide, taking you on an Aussie adventure from the comfort of your own home. Imagine the thrill of the games, the roar of the crowd, and the scent of the pitch, all through my words and lens. I'll spin stories that will make you feel like you’ve scored the winning goal! A big 'merci' for taking a moment from your day to read this. Your support means more than a Stanley Cup win on home ice. Here's to making this dream a reality, together! ⚽️
