'Enough On Our Plates' is a visual story of survival inside Irish state run direct provision centres and homeless hubs / emergency accommodation. Behind every eviction, deportation, repossession or relocation there's a human story that needs to be told.
Direct Provision; is a system of asylum seeker accommodation used across Ireland. The system has been criticised by human rights organisations as illegal, inhuman and degrading.
Homelessness; Most recent figures in Ireland show the number of homeless adults to 10,275. This number doesn’t include rough sleepers, families in women’s shelters, people in direct provision or people couch-surfing. Nearly 4,000 children homeless across the country. A 400%+ increase in 4 years.
Homeless people and asylum seekers both face cruel and degrading conditions - Help me share their stories.
People in these situations find it difficult to share their experiences openly and safely. I want to share the photographic stories of those people who face many bureaucratic obstacles for even the simplest thing like, being able to eat your food when you need it or having enough food to eat. There are thousands of families trapped for years in this situation.
I’m creating an photographic exhibition of people I’ve met in these centres, they have given me permission to photograph part of their faces. Those images are hand printed onto old dinner plates to be displayed in a public exhibition space in Dublin in November 2019.
I need you help to:
Photograph the people taking part in the exhibit
Print the finished images and hand print them onto dinner plates
Frame the final works for sale
Hire a public space to display the final work
In addition, I would like to invite the participants of the show who are in direct provision centres and people in homeless emergency centres to have a meal together, so that they can share their experiences.
I intend to sell the final works by silent auction and split the proceeds between:
MASI a collective Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland - and - Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH) an non profit organisation set-up to help Dublin's homeless. ICHH volunteer led organisation offering outreach and advocacy.
