Baby Enna Rose Neiswonger (My Niece) was born on January 27th, 2020 at 10:10am, weighing in at 6lbs and15oz. Her parents are Destiny Corle & Clayton Neiswonger.
Enna was born with a congenital heart defect, in other words she has multiple heart defects in one. Her heart is on the right side but points to the left, so it is completely backwards. Also, half of her heart is significantly smaller than the other, making the other half work twice as hard. Before delivery we found out that her vertical vein (which is very important for air flow) was obstructed meaning it's narrow. We didn't know exactly what that meant for survival. Before the obstruction was discovered, Enna was given a 65% chance of surviving, which then decreased to a 40% chance of survival after doctors found the obstruction and that included birth. The surgery Enna had to have was within an hour to an hour and a half of being born, She was taken by ambulance to the UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA were her surgery took place. The surgery entailed putting a hole through the wall of her heart that was blocking her air flow and also placing a band around the pulmonary artery so it balances out the air flow from her lungs to her heart. Our little fighter survived the 1st surgery and is currently in the Cardiac ICU in stable condition however, she is on a Ecmo machine controlling the oxygen & carbon dioxide in her blood. The Ecmo machine is doing the work for her heart & lungs at this time. Doctors do not have a predication on when she may be released from the hospital.
They are staying at the Ronald McDonald house connected to the hospital. Baby Enna will have to have another surgery when she is between 3-6 months of age and another one when she is between the ages of 3-5 years of age. Rest assured we have done our research and she is in good hands with the current hospital she is in. UPMC Childrens Hospital is the only hospital in Southwestern PA dedicated solely to the care of infants, children and young adults. They are ranked #10 in the U.S. in heart & heart surgery & #6 in Pulmonology, named a Leapfrog Top Hospital by the the leapfrog group, named to U.S. News and World Report's Best Children's Hospitals Honor Roll and was ranked in every specialty evaluated by US News and they have been consistently ranked among the nation's top pediatric hospitals by US News since 1990. Her nurses, doctors and staff are all very optimistic and have treated our family with nothing but kindness & reassurance. We are in good spirits that we will see baby Enna make it to her first birthday.
In the meantime we are asking for help with medical cost. Baby Enna has a long road ahead of her with continued follow-up appointments, continued surgeries, medications, etc. She is their first baby. Her name means "Shinning Light" and that is just what she is, our "Shinning Light".
Any help and support would be greatly appreciated, even if it's just helping to spread the word.
