Engineering Design Camp for Hadley George

Donation protected
Last week my son Hadley was presented with an incredible opportunity to participate in a two-week Engineering Design Camp at UW Madison. This is a rare opportunity open to students internationally. Only 16 slots are available each year. To qualify, students must be designated academically talented, earn straight-A's, submit a personal essay and letters of recommendation.

Hadley's teachers, case-manager, and Gifted and Talented Coordinator have been incredibly encouraging and supportive with regard to nurturing Hadley's gifts. After receiving his IQ test results last week, I feel an even greater obligation as Hadley's parent to do everything in my power to provide him with every opportunity afforded him. Unfortunately, financial constraints stand in our way; a giant roadblock for many children like my son.

After Hadley's father passed unexpectedly when Hadley was two, many friends and family offered Hadley and I support, and sometimes financial support. I turned down financial support because I felt there were many others who needed help much more than we did. I've always hated asking for help. I prefer to be self-sufficient. That is why this is so hard.  I am swallowing my pride and asking for any help, no matter how small because I don't want this opportunity to pass by because I didn't do everything in my power to make this opportunity a reality.

Hadley has dreamed of becoming an architect or an engineer since he was in fourth grade. When Hadley learned of this opportunity-- to participate in a two-week camp and learn from UW professors about structural engineering and design, he was beyond ecstatic.  My hopes were dashed when learning that the deadlines for scholarships and financial aid had passed. In desperation, I called the camp coordinator and asked if there was ANYTHING I could do. She suggested reaching out to friends and family for help because unfortunately, all the scholarships were gone. So, that is what I am doing now; I am reaching out to friends and family. Thank you for considering.
