On the 24th of February 2022 Russia invaded Ukraine. To date, official figures show 47,000 deaths, 2,300 homes, schools, workplaces, hospitals and other buildings destroyed and at least 15,000,000 people displaced.
I have lived in Australia since 2012 when I came here from Ukraine with nothing but two suitcases. My family who remained in Ukraine make up a small part of that 15 million who have lost their homes and their livelihoods. Australia has offered protection to Ukrainians fleeing from the constant bombings inflicted by the invaders. My cousin fled the war and made it to Australia I have managed to settle him in here, pay for his tickets medical and accommodation as well as for two other refugee families, but, his parents, his sister and their children fled the war and ended up in Europe with nowhere to go and nobody to turn to.
A recent change to the Government’s offer of help means that to accept Australia’s offer of assistance they need to be in Australia by the 14th of July. They also need to undergo medicals at their own expense. I had booked and paid for their tickets but they were for the end of the month and now they cannot use them. The deadline of the 14th of July means that we simply do not have that kind of money to cover extremely short notice tickets, medicals and somewhere to stay for a family with children and two elderly people before they manage to settle in and find work. I have paid for as much of these costs as I can but we are still short of the amount needed. I am fundraising for $40,840 for plane tickets, medicals, and somewhere to stay for a family. This comes out to $2,894 per ticket for 10 people, $300 per medical for 10 people and $8,900 short notice, short term accommodation for 10 people. I have already given literally everything that I had and I am still short by this insurmountable amount. I need help, otherwise these people will have nowhere to go.
I will post updates to this page as often as I can.
