On November 22, 2022, I received a call that my daughter Emilia needed urgent care at the Edmonton Stollery Children's hospital due to a blood sugar level of 42.7 and and A1C of 12.9, indicating possible diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA). Driving through the first snow storm of the year we arrived at the ER, but Emilia was quickly triaged and admitted. Amid the chaos, two compassionate women provided music therapy, soothing Emilia with an ocean wave bead drum and singing "You are my sunshine" a song I used to sing to her. We also found a "lucky loonie" under her bed, a small sign of hope not matter the outcome of the visit.

A short while later a endocrinologist confirmed Emilia had Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune condition where her pancreas no longer produces insulin, requiring multiple daily injections, constant glucose monitoring and meticulous carbohydrate counting. We were told her life expectancy could be reduced, and she faces risks for serious health issues. Fortunately, she wasn't in DKA, so we went home with plans for diabetic training the next day, preparing us to manage her condition until she is old enough to take over.

Through our journey over the last two years we have come to learn about Diabetic Alert Dogs. Despite advanced technology like a continuous glucose monitor, these dogs excel at detecting dangerous blood sugar fluctuations, alerting her to highs or lows - especially during sleep or when she is distracted- often with more reliably and faster than devices. Not only would a dog help prevent life-threatening episodes, it would give her independence and safety as she navigates adulthood with Type 1 Diabetes.

To raise funds for this costly but life-changing companion, Emilia has decided to start a SUGAR FREE lemonade stand. This initiative will engage the community, raise awareness about Type 1 Diabetes and help her to reach her goal. Each cup sold will symbolize her resilience- turning the "lemons" of her diagnosis into "lemonade" by funding a dog to support her future independence.
