Hello Everyone!
My name is Julia, and I'm embarking on a life-changing journey to volunteer at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. I am a passionate advocate for social justice and educational equity, currently pursuing a Master's degree in Social Entrepreneurship and Change at Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Psychology and Education. Over the last year, I have been extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with the U.S. Africa Institute, a Los Angeles-based organization dedicated to promoting understanding between the United States and Africa through educational initiatives. The USAI strives to bring people closer together through education, exchanges, and peacebuilding. Their mission is to promote access to education, empower youth, promote democracy, strengthen peacebuilding, and enhance cultural exchange and public diplomacy.
I am thrilled to share that I was invited to work on a current project with the USAI by contributing to a critical initiative at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya. Through this initiative, I will work collaboratively with CUEA to strengthen their academic partnerships with US universities. My role will facilitate meetings, foster connections with potential collaborators, and support the existing collaboration between CUEA and Pepperdine University. This collaborative effort aims to establish new exchange programs, enhance faculty and student exchange opportunities, and ultimately contribute to a more robust academic environment for students at both institutions.
Through this GoFundMe campaign, I'm seeking your support to cover my travel and living expenses, allowing me to dedicate myself fully to contributing to CUEA's mission. Together, we can foster greater academic exchange and empower the next generation of global leaders.
Why CUEA?
CUEA is a beacon of education in East Africa, empowering students to become future leaders and agents of positive change. Their unwavering commitment to social justice, peacebuilding, and interfaith dialogue profoundly aligns with my values. Having directly worked with the U.S. Africa Institute's mission, I've developed a strong personal connection to their work. This experience not only deepened my dedication but also ensured a genuine desire to make a meaningful impact on this specific USAI project. Participating in this project presents an invaluable opportunity for on-the-ground experience. CUEA stands out as a leading educational institution in East Africa, providing students with the knowledge and skills to become leaders and changemakers.
What will I be doing during my time at CUEA:
My role at CUEA extends beyond simply fostering academic collaboration. It presents a unique opportunity for me to learn and grow- personally, critically, and academically- while gaining firsthand experience in supporting and expanding international university partnerships.
My primary objective is to leverage my experience with the U.S. Africa Insitute and the ongoing collaboration between CUEA and CDU to further strengthen and expand existing academic partnerships between CUEA and US institutions.
I will actively contribute to CUEA's international office in several ways. This includes leading meetings, facilitating faculty discussions on research collaboration and program development, and building new connections with US universities through capacity-building initiatives.
By supporting faculty and student exchange programs, I will help enhance CUEA's capacity through workshops and grant proposals. I will also facilitate faculty discussions on research collaborations and program development, ensuring long-term sustainability for future generations.
Throughout this project, I will serve as a bridge between CUEA and US institutions. This role will foster communication, explore funding opportunities, and ensure smooth stakeholder collaboration.
By actively supporting the existing CUEA-CDU project and exploring new avenues for faculty and student exchange programs, I am able to contribute to a more sustainable future for generations to come.
This experience is more than just a project; it's an opportunity for mutual growth and a chance to build lasting connections that benefit both the US and Africa.
How Your Contribution Makes a Difference: Every donation, big or small, brings me closer to making a real difference for this project. Your support will:
Offset my travel costs: This includes airfare, travel insurance, and potential airport fees (estimated at ~$2,500).
Cover my living expenses: This includes food, accommodation, and local transportation (estimated at ~$1,000), with a buffer for unforeseen expenses.
Shots and Medical Preparation: The CDC and WHO recommend several vaccinations for travel to Kenya, including Yellow fever, Typhoid, Hepatitis B, and Measles. The CDC recommends that all international travelers be fully vaccinated. (estimated at ~$1000)
Additional Funds: Any extra funds raised will be donated directly to the organization to support its ongoing initiatives.
Beyond Fundraising, A Commitment to Impact:
This opportunity in Kenya transcends a simple trip. It represents a unique chance to gain invaluable firsthand experience and contribute to a lasting positive impact. This project aligns with the U.S. Africa Insitute's core mission of fostering U.S.-Africa relations through university partnerships. I am deeply committed to exploring and defining these partnerships for the benefit of both continents and the world. My USAI experience has taught me the importance of realistic goals and practical applications. This project allows me to witness real-world challenges, successes, and the consequences of fostering U.S.-Africa educational ties. As a global citizen, I understand the responsibility of such involvement. My primary focus is ensuring our efforts leave a lasting, positive impact on the CUEA community.
On a personal level, I am to broaden my understanding of the world and challenge my existing perspectives. My goal is to contribute to building sustainable partnerships and fostering long-lasting relationships where assistance is genuinely needed and desired.
Together, we can make a change that extends far beyond borders.
By supporting this campaign, you're not just funding a trip but also investing in creating a more connected and equitable future.
