Empowering Alejandra’s Battle Against Oral Cancer

My name is Irma, and I am reaching out to you with a heavy heart and a story of resilience. Last fall, my lifelong best friend received a life-changing diagnosis of oral cancer. What followed was a challenging journey that has not only tested her strength but has also taught her and those around her the importance of advocating for oneself in the face of adversity.

I want to share her story in the hope that it may inspire self-advocacy and to raise awareness of oral cancer. Alejandra's journey began with persistent symptoms that were initially dismissed by doctors on multiple occasions. Despite their reassurances that she was fine, her instincts told her otherwise. She had to become her own advocate, pushing for further investigation until, unfortunately, her fears were confirmed. Months went by before she received the proper diagnosis, and during that time, the cancer progressed.

To combat the aggressive cancer, Alejandra underwent surgery to remove the tumor from her tongue and lymph nodes from her throat.

This experience has shed light on larger issues - the misdiagnosis that many individuals, especially women, face in their healthcare journey and the rise in oral cancer cases among women under 40. Despite the surgical intervention, doctors have not been able to pinpoint the cause of Alejandra’s oral cancer. This uncertainty underscores the urgent need for increased research into the factors contributing to the surge in oral cancer cases, particularly among women. Alejandra is not alone in this struggle, and it has become our mission to raise awareness about the importance of trusting one's intuition and being an advocate for personal health.

Alejandra has recently embarked on the difficult path of radiation treatment, a choice that she believes will lead to a brighter, healthier future.
