Fire Within is a series of four-week Flamenco dance workshops, created by Dance Flamenco DC and partially funded by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, that brings the empowering art of Flamenco to survivors of domestic and gender-based violence. In partnership with My Sister's Place in Washington DC, these workshops are open to women and those who identify as women who are receiving services through domestic violence shelters, safe spaces, or organizations. The primary goal of Fire Within is to use the unique movement and spirit of Flamenco as a way for participants to reduce the symptoms of trauma and reclaim their bodies in a safe, supportive environment.

Flamenco is an art form that celebrates the spirit within. It invites dancers to express themselves with power and energy, giving opportunities for those not heard to be seen, celebrated, and given space. From the youngest to the oldest, Flamenco engages millions of people around the world. It is a particularly empowering dance for women, offering a method of release and reconnection to oneself. Through assertive body posture, lyrical movement, and percussive footwork, participants feel increased confidence, a sense of self, and joy. Studies have shown that dance and dance therapy can reduce the symptoms of trauma and PTSD, and Flamenco offers a unique pathway for mind-body connection and healing.

Funds raised will cover travel stipends, childcare, and provide Flamenco shoes and skirts for participants, ensuring that all women and girls who wish to participate can do so without barriers. Fire Within is more than a project—it's a celebration of art, culture, and the vibrant spirit of our community, while empowering the lives of women and girls.
