Empower Sonia’s recovery: Help her find a new-normal after a sudden, life-altering day

Dear friends and community,

My dear friend Sonia—a devoted mother of two and trusted Northern Beaches family dentist—is facing a profound life change following the sudden and unexpected amputation of her right leg.

Last November, within a span of just 24 hours, Sonia’s life was turned upside down. What began as mild discomfort quickly escalated into an emergency situation at Northern Beaches Hospital.

She was diagnosed with severe strep A sepsis – a life-threatening condition that damages vital organs and, often, causes death.

Her condition deteriorated rapidly, necessitating an emergency transfer to the ICU and an induced coma. In a critical, life-saving procedure, Sonia’s entire right leg was amputated.

Nine months have now passed. Sonia is courageously adjusting to a new reality and working tirelessly towards being discharged from the amputee rehabilitation unit.

She is determined to come home, reunite with her children and return to her active role within our community.

However, her road to recovery is paved with significant financial challenges. Parenting primary-aged children while navigating life with crutches and new prosthesis is a daunting task, but if anyone can meet this challenge head-on with grace, it’s our Sonia.

While Sonia will receive some support through the NDIS, it unfortunately does not cover all of her ongoing expenses.
