These are the many ways to greet any of my refugee students who attend English language classes in Phoenix, Arizona.

As of 2024, 126 million people worldwide are displaced from their countries of origin. They are considered refugees or asylum seekers. Why are so many people seeking asylum? The primary reason for displacement is persecution due to race, religion, nationality or political beliefs. Other causes for refugees include war and violence, political instability, natural disasters, human rights violations, climate change and poverty or lack of opportunity.

The U.S. refugee resettlement program has a long history, with the number of admissions fluctuating over time, often in response to global events and political decisions.

When they arrive in the US, there are usually programs to help them settle into their new country. One of these programs is the one I teach: English Language Training. I offer classes at two sites in the Phoenix area, including classes of English Literacy, Beginner's English, Intermediate English and Computer Literacy.

Clients often receive bus transportation that lasts only for the first 3 months, which is not long enough to learn English. Transportation to and from class is often a challenge for my clients. I want to offer incentives that will support their education and livelihood in taking my programs, such as:
