Empower Matt Manley's Students with Inclusive Learning

Aloha, greetings, y buenos dias!

My students are brilliant, creative, resilient, multilingual, multicultural, and curious. They are powerful writers, readers, and world-changers. And they are very different from each other in all kinds of ways!

To accommodate different learning preferences, special needs, linguistic backgroubds, etc. of my students, I am implementing a teaching and learning approach called Universal Design for Learning (UDL) this year. This involves intentionally designing my curriculum to eliminate barriers for students so that they can access and attain grade-level and above learning.

This is where the fund-raising comes in! A few materials and resources will be VERY handy as I seek to use new strategies this year to guarantee ALL my students learn:

• Headphones - $100 - To help students access various media such as audiobooks, videos, and pre-recorded lessons.

• Accessible/High Interest Novels and Non-Fiction Books - $275 - An excellent classroom library is one research-backed way to provide equitable access to great reads for all students.

• Treats/Incentive Items for peer tutors - $45 - To buy pizza for students who opt in to being a peer tutor and learn how to effectively guide their peers in learning.

• Folders and Organizational materials - $90 - To help students organize and own their own learning process

• Colored pencil box and art supplies - $80 - To support project work and assignments that allow students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

• ChatGPT 4o Membership/Screencastify Premium - 10 months - $210 - Generative AI and other tech tools are amazing resources for personalizing learning and quickly generating relevant content.

My name is Matt Manley, and I am an 8th-grade English Language Arts and Leadership teacher at Pioneer Middle in Walla Walla, WA. I have taught students grades 5 through College in Washington, Thailand, New Mexico, and Hawaii.

Pioneer MS in Walla Walla, WA serves an incredible student body and encourages each child to own their own learning while practicing Grit, Ownership, Leadership, and Dignity. While over 65% of students come from low-income backgrounds, we have vibrant academic programs, student leadership groups, and athletics opportunities.
