Empower Maryalice: Support Her New Wheelchair

Donation protected
Maryalice is a bright, spunky eleven year old who is just starting middle school. She loves Squishmallows, mac and cheese, and facetiming with her friends. She also suffers from a debilitating rare bone disease called Olliers Disease. Due to the rarity of Maryalice's condition, she must travel from Southern Oregon to Seattle for all of her specialized medical care. Since 2018, Maryalice has undergone seven surgeries to try to correct the deformity and limb length discrepancy caused by her Olliers. This fall she will travel to her team of specialists at Seattle Children's Hospital and have surgery number eight. Maryalice's daily life and functional mobility is greatly impacted by her Olliers. Three years ago she started using a manual wheelchair for outings that required significant walking or standing, and for getting around campus at school. Her wheelchair has been a blessing! Maryalice was able to keep up with her friends and save her energy for learning. But due to her Olliers, Maryalice is not able to propel her manual wheelchair and must rely on friends to push her from place to place. We knew that middle school would come with significant challenges like being different than her peers and not always having reliable friends to help with her wheelchair. In November of 2023 we started the process of getting her fitted and approved for a motorized wheelchair. Her specialists in Seattle, her providers here at home and in Eugene, and even our insurance all agreed that Maryalice is an excellent candidate for a motorized wheelchair. We worked with providers to find a less expensive option that would not require us to purchase a special van or make costly modifications to our home. Since November, we have fought with our insurance company to get her a motorized wheelchair that fits her needs. We are currently waiting on our second appeal do be decided, though we have already been told it will be denied. After almost a year of constant stress and frustration we are humbly turning to our community to help us provide a wheelchair with power assist for our wonderful little girl. Any assistance will go directly to a wheelchair for Maryalice and help with her medical care. We love that Maryalice is surrounded by a community that loves her for who she is and sees the beautiful potential in her life.
