Empower Logan: transforming a Teen's life with Scoliosis

"Welcome to Logan's Journey! I'm Loralee, Logan's devoted mother, and I'm reaching out to you for support. As Logan faces the challenges of severe adolescents idiopathic scoliosis, I'm fundraising to create a safe and healing space for him to thrive on his recovery after a spinal fusion. Join us in making a difference in Logan's life as we embark on this journey together."

Meet Logan, a resilient 15-year-old currently navigating the challenges of being in year 9 while coping with level 2 autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Since his diagnosis, I've been Logan's primary caregiver and advocate, tirelessly supporting him through every obstacle.

Despite his reserved nature, Logan possesses a heart of gold that shines through his actions. In September 2023, a seemingly innocent observation by Logan's dad uncovered a concerning anomaly – his spine appeared abnormal when he bent over shirtless. Rushing to schedule a doctor's appointment, I sifted through countless photos, realizing that layers of winter clothing had concealed the signs of scoliosis during a period of rapid growth.

Our journey led us to a specialist in Sydney, where Logan underwent a battery of tests, including exams, x-rays, and an MRI. The verdict was severe scoliosis, with a staggering 67-degree curve. Surgery became imperative, as the curve exceeded the effectiveness of bracing.

Now, we're in a waiting game, hoping for Logan to grow a bit more before the surgery. However, waiting has brought its own set of challenges – excruciating pain. Logan's ribs press against his chest, making breathing difficult, while bending and sitting are agonizing due to limited space between his ribs and pelvis.

As a result, Logan's schooling has suffered, with most of this term spent in discomfort. He's unable to participate in sports or social activities like before, compounding the already daunting task of navigating social interactions with autism.

But perhaps the most pressing concern is Logan's living situation. Sharing a cramped room with his youngest sister, Logan's post-surgery reality is bleak. The bunk beds they currently share will no longer be an option, as climbing the ladder is already a challenge, let alone after surgery. Their room is not large enough for any other bed configurations.

In the short term, my mother-in-law has graciously offered to give up her bedroom after Logan returns home from the hospital, relocating to a small converted shed. However, this is not a sustainable solution. Logan needs a space of his own, a safe haven where he can heal without the constraints of a cramped room.
With both Logan's dad and I relying on carers pensions due to the demands of caring for multiple children with disabilities, the financial burden of creating a suitable space for Logan is overwhelming. Logan's dad is already making modifications to our bathroom to accommodate Logan's needs post-surgery.

I am stepping out of my comfort zone as a parent and humbly asking for your help. Please join us in making Logan's new reality a bit easier to adjust to. Help us provide him with a sanctuary away from the noise of his sisters, a place where he can heal and recover with dignity. A room where he can have bed without needing to bend, a recliner/lift chair to help with his mobility, and floor space for his physiotherapy and recovery.

Your contribution will make a tangible difference in Logan's life, providing him with the space and comfort he desperately needs. Thank you for considering our plea and for helping us give Logan the gift of a safe and nurturing environment to embark on his journey to recovery.
