Nepal Flood Relief: Help Us Deliver Urgent Medical and Humanitarian Aid

I’m Michael Sohmer, a retired clinical pharmacist, longtime disaster-response professional, and co-founder of Sweeping Change, a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. I have worked in Nepal on multiple medical and humanitarian missions, including responding after the 2015 earthquake.

Recent devastating flooding in Nepal has displaced families, damaged communities, disrupted access to care, and created urgent needs for medical treatment, medications, food, clean water, shelter, and basic necessities.

Sweeping Change has longstanding relationships in Nepal and direct experience providing medical care and humanitarian assistance in remote communities.

Medical care will be at the heart of this response.

We are assembling a team of experienced doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other medical and disaster-response professionals to travel to Nepal and provide direct care to people affected by the flooding. Team members will fund their own international airfare. Sweeping Change will cover food, lodging, and in-country transportation from the designated launching point so that our team can focus on caring for patients and supporting affected communities.

Donations will support both the medical mission and the people who have been displaced. Funds may be used for medications, wound-care supplies, medical equipment, clinical supplies, food, clean water, hygiene items, clothing, shoes, eyeglasses, shelter materials, and other urgent necessities.

This is not our first response in Nepal. Following the 2015 earthquake, we brought a medical team into affected communities and purchased essential items such as rice, cooking oil, shoes, eyeglasses, medications, and wound-care supplies based on what people actually needed on the ground.

We will take the same practical approach now.

Rather than assuming what is needed from thousands of miles away, we will work with trusted partners and communities in Nepal to identify the most urgent needs and direct funds where they can have the greatest immediate impact.

Every donation, large or small, will help us bring medical care, essential supplies, and humanitarian support to people facing an extraordinarily difficult recovery.
