Help Us Build a Safe Girls’ Dorm in Mukulaikwa, Zambia
Hi, we’re Empowerment Ministries International (EMI), based in Bakersfield, California. We are raising support for the Girls’ Dorm Project in the rural community of Mukulaikwa, Zambia, where hundreds of girls fight every day just to stay in school.
Because their homes are long distances away, many girls rent small mud huts, live with strangers, or walk miles alone in the dark. These huts are unprotected, unsafe, and often overcrowded. In these conditions, girls are harassed, abused, and left vulnerable to exploitation. The consequences are devastating:
Typical huts girls stay in when school is far from home.
- Some girls become pregnant through abuse
- Many are forced to drop out of school
- Others are blamed and shamed for circumstances they never chose
- Their education ends. Their dreams vanish. Their future narrows.
We believe that should never be their story. Together, we can rewrite that story.
The Girls’ Dorm Project
Meet one of the young school girls from Mukalawkwa, Zambia, expressing her deep gratitude for the completion of the first girls’ dormitory. Her testimony represents hundreds just like her whose lives are being transformed.
From Hut to Dorm!
The new Girls’ Dorm at Mukulaikwa is now fully equipped with solar power, running water, and self-contained bathrooms — providing safety, dignity, and the resources girls need to focus on their education and future.
With the help of caring partners, the first Girls’ Dorm was built at Mukulaikwa School to provide a safe, supervised, Christ-centered environment where girls can sleep safely, study, and thrive — you can view video of the completed dorm here.
It was designed to house 56–60 girls, but today it shelters over 140.
More than twenty sleep in the recreation hall. Eight girls share rooms built for four.
Safety has arrived — but space has not. The need is urgent.
Over 400 girls attend Mukulaikwa School, and hundreds still have no safe place to sleep.
That is why we are building the next dorm.
Our Immediate Goal
We have launched this GoFundMe to raise $10,000 toward construction and preparation of the next Girls’ Dorm. This amount covers essential building components, sanitation facilities, foundational materials, and beds so girls no longer have to risk their lives just to attend school.
Every dollar given here goes directly to the dorm.
Every gift moves a girl from fear to safety — from surviving to thriving. Your generosity becomes a shelter.
Your Impact Lasts a Lifetime
Every contribution builds safety, dignity, and opportunity:
$25 – School supplies & hygiene kit
$50 – Safe water & nutritious meals
️ $100–$250 – A bed, mattress, and shared cubicle
$500+ – Building materials, sanitation, and dorm facilities
Whether you give $25 or $500, you are helping build a safe place where girls can sleep, study, and dream again.
How You Can Help Today
If your heart is stirred by the thought of a girl sleeping safely tonight instead of in fear, we invite you to:
Give what you’re able — every gift matters
Share this campaign with your community, church, or friends
Pray for the girls and for the teams serving them
No girl should lose school because she doesn’t have a safe place to sleep. Together, we can change that. One dorm. One girl. One future.
Thank you for standing with these girls.
