Empower Kara Yancey's Artistic Journey

First off, if you've already ended up here thank you for giving me a moment of your time and following the link! I understand that the past few year have brought up hard financial times for many people of all communities. For transparency; I do feel a bit silly for asking for support in something that may seem trivial as I am someone who is no stranger to struggle myself.

Many of you may know I have been an artist my entire life. On the week of April 9th I was finishing up a few submissions and found myself shooting my shot at the School of Visual Arts summer residency for Illustration. I thought to myself "What's the worst they can say? No?" It was the final week for submissions and I was already feeling confident from completing other applications. While I'm writing this it is April 14th 2025 and I've just received notice that I have been accepted into the program! Being that the submission was made on a whim of hope the financial contribution is a last minute, relatively large, expense for me to handle on my own. For the month long residency the fee amounts to $3,400 and that is before travel and materials. I'm putting aside my pride to ask for help with this bill.

Attending this program would be my first time taking part in a residency. It has been nearly a decade since I engaged with an institution of higher learning at all. After rebuilding trust in myself as a person and a creative professional I am so excited to get the news that I have a chance to join a group of artists who are dedicated to the process of advancing in the practice of storytelling through art. Art making and communing with creative communities has always been an integral part of my mental, emotional and spiritual health. I believe that attending the program will better my understanding of self as a professional artist while helping to ground and advance my career in Illustration.

The fees are due in a little under two weeks (by April 27th, 2025). I appreciate any help or passing on of this gofundme link more than you know!! If the amount needed to attend and sustain my study within the program isn't met by the due date all donations will be refunded in full.
