Empower Hilary's Teaching Journey with Mobility

Hello friends, family, co-workers and kind people,

My name is Pedro Cabrera, I'm Hilary Cabrera's husband, and this GoFundMe's goal is a simple one: to help Hilary have the ability to gain more independence to she can teach her students.

A backstory, Hilary is an amazing, intelligent, loving, smart and passionate individual whose passion for Art drove her to pursue her dream career of being a teacher. Since then she's had 10 years as an Art Teacher and has touched many young lives. Many of her students have been inspired by Hilary to become educators themselves or pursued careers using the skills they developed in her art classes. She teaches a broad range of art, from drawing to ceramics, photography to art history, she fully invests herself in teaching the growth of her students. She's since become a Leader in her position as the head of her department and her dedication to her student is not without notice.

Late last year, in 2023, Hilary fell upon the hard news that she has MS (Multiple Sclerosis). Multiple Sclerosis is an auto-immune condition where upon your immune system attacks the myelin, which is the shielding layer around the nerves, think of removing the shielding of an electrical wire. This disease can impact the brain and spinal columns and can cause a wide range of nerve related issues. In Hilary's case, its lead to skin sensitivity on her right side in the form of the skin feeling like it has a bad sunburn, and spasticity which is the tightening of the muscles. This has all lead to increased fatigue as the nerves are not operating at their optimal level. Heat has a big impact on the fatigue the nerves feel, and greatly reduce Hilary's ability to operate.

Despite the challenges, Hilary has remained steadfast in her pursuit of her passion for teaching and will not back away from education and her dream career. Its been truly inspiring to myself, our friends and family and her colleagues to see her continue to deliver in such a high energy-high demand environment despite her disability.

So, this GoFundMe is in an effort to get Hilary an electric wheelchair that she can keep at her job for those long exhausting days teacher's have to go through so that she can still move around without the need of asking for assistance from her students and colleagues.
