Help HBBA Raise $25K to Free 250 Nigerians Needing Justice

My name is Yemisi Ojo and I'm reaching out to you about a cause close to my heart. Before I left Nigeria, I spent about 3 years volunteering for Hope Behind Bars Africa, which provides free legal representation to poor people awaiting trial in Nigerian prisons. I had the privilege of being part of some incredible stories.

Take Chris, for example. Chris was randomly picked up by the police and tortured in police custody for months. He ended up spending five years awaiting trial in prison for a crime he did not commit because he was too poor to afford a lawyer. It took only one appearance by one of Hope Behind Bars Probono lawyers to get him out. Today, Chris has been able to rebuild his life and is advocating for justice.

Why It's Important to Me:

I have too many stories like that of Chris to share, and this cause hits home for me because I grew up and lived across various states in Nigeria like Sokoto, Benue and Kwara and I experienced firsthand the impact of injustice within our communities, especially for people with very little resources.

As a volunteer, I watched the passion of Hope Behind Bars Africa Probono lawyers working tirelessly to provide legal representation, sometimes using their own resources to handle certain cases.

I believe, and you will agree with me, that every individual deserves access to justice regardless of their circumstances. In 5 years, Hope Behind Bars has directly represented over 600 pretrial detainees. Pro bono lawyers are the frontline warriors fighting for the rights of the marginalised. However, without enough resources to support their efforts, it is hard to achieve any tangible work. This can change with your support.

How the Funds Will Be Used:

The funds we raise will directly support the pro bono lawyers, covering vital expenses like transportation of the lawyers to court, filing fees and other necessities. Some part of the money will also be used for paying minor fines for those with petty crimes- like hawking or loitering. It will shock to know that fines as low as $10 or $20 keep people behind bars.

By easing these financial burdens, we empower the pro-bono lawyers to continue providing legal aid to those who need it most. Your contribution isn't just a donation; it's a lifeline for individuals seeking help behind bars.
