Help Blind First-Gen Hungarian Get Tools to Practice Law

Gyula Lajos Szilagyi came to America as a first-generation Hungarian with hopes that most young people have — to study, to work, to make his family proud. But at age 17, life changed abruptly when he began to lose his vision. His family at first struggled to believe what was happening until doctors diagnosed him with a rare condition of Retinitis Pigmentosa . Over the next several years his sight faded completely.

Many would have stopped there, but Gyula refused. He transformed himself from a struggling student into a scholar. He mastered five forms of Braille, learned to tune pianos (he even tuned mine to perfection), became a pianist himself, received a Bachelor’s in history with high honors, and later earned a specialized law degree: LLM in International Law.

Gyula is now preparing to take the Bar and open his practice to serve the people of Florida — especially those who need legal help but can’t easily afford it. But between the high cost of Bar preparation, hurricane damage to his property, and medical expenses, some of the technology required for his work has been financially out of reach.

This GoFundMe aims to provide Gyula with a high-end Mac computer equipped with advanced accessibility features, along with accessories for the blind. These tools will allow him to independently handle complex legal databases, draft documents, and file electronically — leveling the playing field so he can serve clients who might otherwise go without representation.

This technology is not a luxury — it is essential for legal research, drafting, filings, and communication.

Anything you give will directly support Gyula’s transition from student to practicing attorney. His goal is not merely personal success — he wants to serve others, prove that blindness does not define a life’s worth, and honor the sacrifices his family made coming to this country.

I've seen Gyula's determination firsthand — your support will help turn his vision for justice into reality.

If you cannot donate, please consider sharing.

I sincerely thank you for helping Gyula take the next step in his remarkable journey.
