The day after I turned 17, I was diagnosed with a rare progressive neuromuscular disease called Friedriech's Ataxia (FA). Over the last 4 years my ability to walk safely has diminished greatly. I use a walker or wheelchair to go to work and school. This disease doesn't have a cure and continually causes worsening heart, speech, energy, and coordination problems.
What's the best thing I can do to battle against this relentless disease? WORKOUT. A LOT. I push myself at S10 Fitness and Crossfit 1904. I know if I keep as fit as possible I can more effectively do the things that bring me joy- have fun with my family, play wheelchair basketball, play with my Canine Companion service dog Epic, and most important- FISH!
Here is the issue...when I do a workout at Crossfit 1904, I do some heavy lifting and big moves while in my wheelchair. The chair is my everyday wheelchair that I use to go to school and work. It has a back that folds down for transport. I am afraid I am going to break the back of my chair right off! I wouldn't be able to get to work or school without it.
I met with the amazing designers at Hands on Concepts to learn about a fixed frame titanium CrossFit wheelchair. They drew up plans to create a chair to perfectly fit my 6'3" body. The price- $5,991.64. That is without the wheels and seat cushion. I am getting those separately which will be close to $1,100.
I don't just love working out. I love my trainers. I love the people that workout beside me. I love feeling strong despite being challenged every minute by a genetic condition. If you are interested in supporting me with purchasing a shirt please visit- tShirt Fundraiser
