Dear Friends and Supporters,
My name is Roman, I am from Germany, and I have had the privilege of knowing Dorcas Naishorua personally for several years. Throughout our collaboration at various global climate events, I've witnessed firsthand Dorcas's unwavering commitment, courage, and remarkable leadership as a Maasai climate activist from Kenya.
Dorcas Naishorua, crowned Miss Climate Kenya in 2023, has become a powerful advocate for climate justice, environmental conservation, and women's rights. Coming from a Maasai community in Kajiado County, Kenya, Dorcas has overcome numerous social and economic barriers to raise awareness about the severe impacts of climate change on pastoralist communities like her own.
Her Advocacy Against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
In addition to her environmental efforts, Dorcas is a staunch advocate against FGM and child marriages. She founded the Isilan Community-Based Organization, working closely with survivors to empower them economically and socially. Through this initiative, she provides skills training in beadwork, enabling women to earn an income and gain financial independence. This empowerment helps reduce the prevalence of FGM and early marriages in her community.
The Importance of Your Support
The cost of a university education, including tuition fees and on-campus accommodation, may seem modest to someone from a wealthier country. However, for Dorcas, as a young woman from a marginalized Maasai community, these costs present significant challenges. Without external support, pursuing higher education is nearly impossible, despite her exceptional potential and dedication.
Potential Consequences Without Funding
If Dorcas does not secure funding for her studies, she faces limited options:
Continuing her grassroots efforts within the community, striving to make a difference with the resources available.
Facing cultural pressures where young women who are not engaged in education or formal employment are often compelled into arranged marriages, sometimes with significantly older men.
How Your Contributions Will Help
Your generous donations will directly fund:
Tuition Fees for her bachelor's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Accommodation Expenses at the university campus.
Educational Resources and Living Expenses necessary for her studies.
By investing in Dorcas's education, you're supporting not just one young woman, but an entire community. Her degree will enable her to continue and expand her local climate actions and advocacy against harmful cultural practices, empowering her to drive significant change both locally and internationally.
Please join me in helping Dorcas Naishorua realize her dream of higher education. Your contribution, large or small, will have a profound impact.
Thank you deeply for your generosity and support!
Warm regards,
Roman
