Hi, my name is Donovan Washington, and I’m a sophomore at the University of Tennessee studying Deaf Studies with the goal of becoming an ASL Interpreter. On campus, I serve as a Resident Assistant and as the Engagement Leader for the UTK Wesley Foundation, where I get to plan weekly events that build community, connection, and faith.
This summer, I have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to Dublin, Ireland to participate in the Global Young People’s Convocation (GYPC)—an international gathering that only takes place once every four years. GYPC brings together young adults from around the world to learn, worship, and engage in meaningful conversations about faith, leadership, and global issues.
Attending GYPC would allow me to grow not only as a student and leader, but as a global citizen. I’ll have the opportunity to learn alongside people from diverse cultures and communities, gain new perspectives on the challenges facing our world, and bring those insights back to the communities I serve at UT and through Wesley Foundation leadership.
As someone who hopes to work closely with the Deaf community and advocate for access and inclusion, experiencing another country and culture will deepen my understanding of communication, culture, and connection beyond my own environment. I’ve always dreamed of traveling one country at a time, and this experience would be a meaningful first step toward that goal.
I’m asking for support to help cover the costs of travel, lodging, and participation in GYPC. Any contribution—big or small—helps make this opportunity possible. Thank you for investing in my growth, my calling, and my journey.
