Empower Deaf Interpreters of Fiji

My name is Krystal Sanders, and I am a Deaf interpreter from the United States with a cherished connection to Fiji and its Deaf community. In 2024, I spent ten weeks in Suva working alongside Deaf Fijians, interpreters, and the Fiji Association of the Deaf, learning Fiji Sign Language (FJSL) and supporting access in schools, community events, and workshops. I have seen firsthand the talent, dedication, and leadership of the Deaf Interpreters of Fiji, and I know how vital their presence is at major events like the WASLI Oceania Conference.

This August, Fiji will host the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI) Oceania Conference, an international gathering of interpreters, Deaf leaders, and allies from across the Pacific. There isn’t enough funding available to support several Deaf Interpreters from Fiji, and without additional help they may not be able to attend this important conference in their own country.

As someone who has worked with these interpreters and seen the incredible value they bring to the community, I believe they deserve equal access to this event. This fundraiser will help cover registration, travel from Suva to Nadi, and room and board so Deaf Interpreters from Fiji can fully participate in WASLI 2025. The conference offers essential professional development through workshops, presentations, and networking with colleagues from across the Pacific, giving Deaf Interpreters the chance to strengthen their skills and represent their community on the world stage.

We are asking for 5,000 USD to support multiple Deaf Interpreters to attend WASLI 2025. This includes a small buffer for GoFundMe fees and any unexpected costs. Every donation, big or small, will make a direct impact in making this opportunity possible.
