Bunnie Benton Cruse is a staple in our community. She has poured her heart, soul, and sweat into making the community of Albuquerque thrive. Bunnie is highly regarded, locally and nationally, and is a powerful advocate, community organizer, and social justice professional. If you are a member of the LGBTIQ community, including our allies, you know Bunnie, you have been impacted by Bunnie, and you have been truly seen as you are by Bunnie. For me, Bunnie helped shape my recovery from drugs and alcohol. She was present, taught me I am stronger than I think, and gave me unconditional love while I fought to regain my control.
Now is the time for each of us impacted by Bunnie to give back.
Bunnie’s mom, Mama Cruse, has lost her mobility. Mama Cruse is a survivor (likely where Bunnie learned this from) and continues to fight each day. Bunnie and Mama Cruse have an unconditional love that exists between them and Bunnie will not let this setback prevent Mama Cruse from living her best life. Every day, Bunnie pushes her mom in her wheelchair, allowing her to get fresh air, socialize, and have a world larger than her living room. This is literally a daily climb both endure to have the freedom of movement.
This daily experience is critical to Mama Cruse’s well-being. But, this is not conducive to the lives Bunnie and Mama Cruse live.
They lack transportation that will allow Mama Cruse to get to her appointments, go shopping, get groceries, and, most recently, attend a funeral of a loved one.
Now the ask is simple. We need $5,000 for a down payment on a vehicle or funds to rent a van to allow mobility for the Cruse Family.
