Empower Bunker Hill Youth's Appalachia Project

Bunker Hill United Methodist Church’s Youth Group is raising money to participate in ASP (Appalachian Service Project). ASP works each year from June through August in 20-30 communities across Central Appalachia. The group meets and accepts folks right where they are and just the way they are. They believe all people should be able to live in affordable, safe, and sanitary housing.

Hebrews 13:16 reminds us, “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” This will be the second year our youth will be setting aside a week of their summer plans and dedicating their time and efforts to a week helping others. Last year they learned hard work and humility as they assisted families in Kentucky.

This year they look forward to heading to Clay County, West Virginia June 16th- 22nd. While there they will be divided into teams and assigned to a specific home repair project. After working on a home during the day, the group will gather with other youth groups stationed there for an evening program focused on faith, service, and Appalachia.

In addition to travel expenses, each participant is required to pay mission fees that cover their lodging, and meals, and helps to pay for building materials and staff, among other things. This year we’re thrilled to be taking three teams, however, mission fees alone are nearly $8,000. The group is working hard to raise enough funds to cover the mission fees as well as fuel and travel expenses so that no one person has to pay out of pocket.

Seeing poverty is life-changing. We’re proud that our youth are not only excited to help make more homes warmer, safer, and dryer but also returning and bringing more with them to experience this life-changing mission!
