My name is Antony Koriata, and I come from a small Maasai village in Narok County, Kenya (Mara Ward), a community rich in tradition and culture. I was born into a family of seven boys and one girl, and like many other young people in the village, I began the traditional rites of passage from a very young age, which starts from enkipaata, the induction of boys leading to initiation; eunoto, the shaving of the morans paving the way to adulthood; and olng’esher, the meat eating. During holidays, I had to join my other agemates to ensure that I completed all the rites of passage, help my father look after the livestock, and go back to school after the holidays.

In my parents' generation, livestock-keeping traditions and cultural practices were more important than education. However, unlike most families around us, my father had a different dream—he believed in education even though he didn’t get formal education. He sold part of his livestock and took us to school far from our home, over 55 kilometers away. We were among the few in our village who attended formal education, and even then, it was not easy. I spent some of my early years at my grandmother's due to the cold weather and later joined my elder brothers in a public boarding school where I completed my primary and later joined high school just a few kilometers from my primary school.

Despite the hardships, I stayed grounded in both my culture and academics. I didn’t complete all stages of the traditional warrior (Moran) path, as school took priority. But I held tightly to my values and roots.

After high school, I pursued a short course in nutrition and caregiving at a small college in 2014. That led me to an internship at Christa Marianne Mission Hospital, a major hospital in Kisii County, where I served as a caregiver for seven months. There, I discovered a deep passion for health and service to others.

By the grace of God and the generosity of a sponsor I met through my brother, I was able to pursue a bachelor's degree in public health at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. I graduated in 2022, but my dream didn’t stop there.

Why I’m Raising Funds

I have been accepted into a postgraduate program at Birmingham University (UK) for a one-year master's program, which represents the next step in my mission to bring meaningful health solutions to marginalized communities like the one I grew up in. However, I currently face a major challenge: I need financial support to cover essential travel and relocation costs.
