Empower Alex's Journalism Dream at WJMC

I'm Alex Welch, and I'm trying to raise $2600 to attend the Washington Journalism & Media Conference in Washington, DC. It is put on by George Mason University.

The WJMC is a week-long experiential learning program for highly engaged high school students. Students will experience an integrated and forward-thinking approach to journalism and media while acquiring valuable “in-the-trenches” knowledge. Curriculum includes hands-on learning with industry leaders, award-winning journalists, international media outlets, and Washington insiders.

Why would I want to go to a journalism conference? The answer is simple. I want to have a career in journalism. I am eager to learn all aspects of digital and TV newsgathering, as well as sharpen my writing and photojournalism skills. The WJMC is an effective and compelling way to do that. It will propel me far ahead of my peers with similar goals.

Like a good journalist, I am using all the tools at my disposal to get the job done. In this case, I'm trying to raise money for this excellent learning opportunity, using this website as an effective tool.

I am eternally grateful to anyone who contributes, and will get a personal thank you from me, as well as a full report on the trip itself.

I realize picking a career at 15 may be a rare thing, but I know what it takes to reach my goal. I hope you will help me along that road.
